A football and pop culture sensation as defensive tackle for the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears and rapper in "The Super Bowl Shuffle," William Perry has remained a fixture in football since his retirement in the mid-1990s. . Legions of fan's affectionately referred to him as, 'the Refrigerator' or 'the Fridge' for short.
William Perry was born in Aiken, South Carolina. After a successful run at Aiken High School, Perry played college football at Clemson University. Perry was a three-time All-American at Clemson University and part of the Tigers' 1981 National Champion team. After finishing as the school's all-time sacks leader (his records lasted until brother Michael Dean Perry came along and broke them), the Chicago Bears selected him with the 22nd pick in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft.
Perry gained international notoriety his rookie year in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. As a first round draft pick in the 1985 draft, expectations were high that William would develop into a premier defensive lineman. Not only did he become a pro-bowl lineman on defense, but in a surprise move, Coach Ditka called on him for help on offense.
The nation went crazy as William was called in to run the ball from short yardage during Super Bowl XX. He barreled through the line, into the end zone and into the hearts of millions. You may remember his classic and unique "Fridge" character being captured brilliantly in the Coke commercial with fellow Chicago Bear, Jim McMahon or his A-Team appearance in the 80's hit show where he famously stated, "They'll never catch him", referring to his NFL playing days.
Through that almost perfect 16-1 rookie season, his 9 year NFL career, and now fifteen years in retirement, The Fridge has maintained his status as one of football's most beloved big-men. His Super Bowl ring remains the largest ever made and his popularity continues to grow.
